What is involved

Questionnaires
Completed before your first appointment.

Clinical and developmental interview
Your history from childhood to now: communication, relationships, sensory experience, routines, interests, work.

Developmental information
From a parent, sibling or someone else who knew you as a child, and school reports where available.

Structured assessment where needed
The ADOS-2 is used when it adds something to the picture, not as a matter of routine.

Report and feedback
A full written report, then an appointment to go through it with you.

Outcomes

Autism confirmed.
Autism not confirmed. The report explains what does account for your experience.
Further assessment recommended. The report says what is needed and why.

Common questions

How long does the assessment take?

The full process is normally completed within 8–10 weeks, provided questionnaires and supporting information are returned promptly.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed to arrange the assessment. Revenue may require a referral from a registered medical practitioner if you intend to claim tax relief for a psychologist-led diagnostic procedure, so check the current rules before starting.

Can I claim through health insurance or Revenue?

Some insurance plans include a benefit for adult neurodevelopmental assessment, and qualifying health expenses may be eligible for income-tax relief at the standard rate. Cover and eligibility vary. An itemised receipt with Dr De Búrca's PSI details will be provided, but reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.

Who will I see?

Dr De Búrca, Chartered Clinical Psychologist and PSI Chartered Member, for every appointment. He also writes the report.

Does a parent need to take part?

It helps, but it is not always possible. A sibling, another relative, school reports or earlier assessments can be used instead.

Is the ADOS-2 always used?

No. It is used where it adds to the evidence. The conclusion rests on everything taken together, not on one test.

Can it be done online?

Some or all of it, where that is appropriate. This is agreed before you start.
