How assessment works

No single test decides the outcome. I take a detailed history from childhood to the present, interview you, gather information from someone who knew you as a child where that is possible, and use standardised measures where they add value. I then consider the evidence against the diagnostic criteria and alternative explanations, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties and masking.

If the evidence does not support a clear conclusion, I will say so clearly and explain what further information may be needed.

Reducing the cost

Health insurance and tax relief

Some private health-insurance plans include a benefit for adult neurodevelopmental or psychological assessment. Cover and claim limits vary, so check your table of benefits or contact your insurer before booking.

You may also be eligible for income-tax relief on qualifying health expenses at the standard rate. Revenue's conditions apply and, for a diagnostic procedure carried out by a psychologist, a referral from a registered medical practitioner may be required. If tax relief matters to you, check your eligibility and arrange any required GP referral before the assessment begins.
